Rachel has been a specialist employment relations lawyer for over twenty years, having practiced both in the UK and New Zealand, including as a Special Counsel at Dentons Kensington Swan. In addition to employment law, she also provides advice and advocacy in related areas such as health and safety, education law, medico legal, professional conduct, and human rights. Rachel is an experienced private mediator and often assists parties to resolve issues together through constructive dialogue. Rachel also acts as an independent investigator and has been engaged in many prominent and complex investigations and cultural reviews.

Maria is a leading employment law barrister. Prior to moving to the independent Bar in 2012, Maria was a Senior Associate at Bell Gully and a Principal of the Crown Solicitor’s Office in Wellington. Maria advises public sector and corporate employers nationally on all employment and workplace matters including in areas of complex employment disputes, restructuring, sensitive disciplinary issues, personal grievances and exits, post-employment restraints and protection of confidential information. Maria also undertakes independent investigations and is regularly appointed to undertake high profile and sensitive investigations and reviews into a variety of issues including conflicts of interest, disciplinary matters, sexual harassment and bullying claims.

Liberty joined Kānuka Chambers in 2022 as a law clerk while she completed her law and sociology degrees. She was promoted to junior barrister following her admission and assists Rachel Burt and Maria Austen in complex workplace investigations, legal research, legal drafting, reviewing employment agreements and policies and assisting in both contentious and non-contentious matters.

Liberty is passionate about increasing access to justice for employees and SMEs. She volunteers at the Wellington Community Law employment law sessions to this end.
