Rachel Burt

Rachel has worked in both the public and private as a specialist employment and health and safety lawyer.

She enjoys a varied practice, that sees her advise and advocate in the Authority and Courts, assist other clients as an independent mediator with early intervention facilitation or dispute resolution in relation to personal grievances, and act as an independent investigator in many large-scale reviews and investigations. The different areas of focus and practice inform each other, and mean Rachel brings a broad lens and understanding to her work with clients at different stages of disputes.

Rachel works across New Zealand, assisting government departments, crown entities, private enterprise, startups, and senior employees. She advises on all areas of employment law including disciplinary and personal grievance proceedings, restructuring, contractual disputes, restraint of trade issues and privacy and human rights. In addition to provision of advice and advocacy to clients, she enjoys providing practical workshops and training for clients and is a frequent conference speaker at local and national events. Recently she has spoken on issues such as mental health and wellbeing at work, restorative practice in the workplace, and establishing a framework for effective workplace investigations.

Investigations

Rachel has a national profile as an independent investigator having acted for many government departments and private corporations in large scale investigations and reviews, including cultural reviews. She has assisted organizations such as Morrison Kent Law, James Hardie, NZ Fish and Game Council, The Green Party of New Zealand Aotearoa, the NZSO, Education NZ and Parliamentary Services. Rachel has enjoyed partnering with kaumātua where a bi-cultural perspective is required.

MEDIATION

Rachel is also an accredited and experienced private mediator. In her mediation work she focuses on restorative practices where that is appropriate, assisting parties to attempt to resolve issues through dialogue. She assists in matters related to sports and recreation, education, and employment law.
